Pilea depressa 'Baby Tears' is a native of Mexico and Brazil, and although it looks similar to true Baby Tears (Helxine soleirolii), Pilea depressa 'Baby Tears' is not very closely related. Leaves of Pilea depressa 'Baby Tears' are smaller than a fingernail and are round and plump.

Container Gardens/Terrariums/Houseplant

Pilea depressa 'Baby Tears' is a great plant for terrariums and container gardens. It can hold up in the humid environment of a terrarium and also does well exposed to normal household humidity levels. It looks great in a hanging basket outdoors in shade as long as the temperatures remain above 70 degrees. Pilea depressa 'Baby Tears' is easy to prune to keep under control. Keep in moist soil. Prefers moderate light.

 

Vivariums/Animal Terrariums:

 Pilea depressa 'Baby Tears' is sturdier than you might think, and will stand up to even the chunkiest dart frog, rapidly forming a dense carpet. Plant Pilea depressa 'Baby Tears' on a vertical surface and it will drape to form a green wall. As with any terrarium plant Pilea depressa 'Baby Tears' will establish better if you put it in a few weeks to a month before adding frogs but once established, it will stand up to high abuse from even the largest frogs. Pilea depressa 'Baby Tears' has a matting/vining habit, and can be planted in the foreground of a vivarium. Pilea depressa 'Baby Tears' will also fair well on the background, as long as Pilea depressa 'Baby Tears' is provided with enough moisture. Pilea depressa 'Baby Tears' has a moderate to high water requirement, and should not be allowed to dry out. Pilea depressa 'Baby Tears' can grow in a wide variety of lighitng conditions, but more intense light will result in a more compact, lower growing habit and lighter green leaves. Pilea depressa 'Baby Tears' can function as a ground cover in the front of a tank, and does not need air circulation.
